Lincoln Youth Baseball: Grand Opening Hitting Class on Saturday 2/1

Lincoln Youth Baseball invites you to our Grand Opening Hitting Classic on Saturday February 1st, anytime between 9 AM – 3 PM. Everyone is welcome to stop by. Even if you don’t plan on having your player hit, you can still stop by to check out the hitting facility.

What:
Three round hitting tournament. Players will hit a total of 60 scored pitches in a row with only machine adjustments between rounds. Tournament results will be available for families to check online. Participants will have the opportunity to warm-up in 6 divided batting cage lanes. Only registered participants may be in the hitting lanes.

Cost:
Free! We want families to come and see our new indoor facility! Athletes can enjoy some friendly winter baseball competition.

Who:
For kids ages 8-14, who play or are thinking about playing for Lincoln Youth Baseball. There will be a check-in for legal and insurance purposes. Please bring signed waivers with you. They are downloadable from our website. Hitting Classic Waiver

When & Where:
February 1, 2020 | 9 AM – 3 PM | 3121 SW Moody Avenue, Portland OR 97239

Parking will be provided on the north side of the barge building. Show up any time between 9 AM and 3 PM. Come by and enjoy some friendly competition! Players will be organized by age and given a time to hit. Families should expect to spend between 1/2 to 1 hour in the facility.

Scoring Details:
Points

  • 1 point for line drives that hit top of cage
  • 2 points for line drives that hit behind and above pitching machine
  • 3 points for line drives that hit the top of the cage and then behind and above the pitching machine

Rounds/Brackets
Players will be scored by round and will have to score in the top groups to advance from a scoring perspective to the next round.  However, they will hit all 60 pitches and not know what that means for their bracket.  Again, we just want to make it fun for the kids to see where they finished after they leave the facility.  Brackets will make it confusing enough for them not to know until after they’re done.

Playground Bricks: Purchase by March 31st for the next round of engraving

If you would like to support Chapman and leave a little legacy on the playground, the brick engraver will be coming to Chapman this spring once the weather has been dry enough days in a row to engrave bricks! This is the first engraving since the installation of the playground.

Donations for each engraved brick start at $250 and can be made here.

If you would like for your brick to be engraved in this spring’s engraving, it MUST be purchased by March 31st. Any brick purchased after March 31st will have to wait at least another year to be engraved. We need a cut off date to approve the inscriptions before the engraving.

Please remember that inscriptions must be no more than 18 characters (spaces, periods, dashes, etc all count as a character) and no more than 3 lines.

Thank you to all who have purchased bricks so far, and we appreciate your patience as we work to get the next round engraved!

Dining for Dollar$ – January

January 22 | NW 23rd & Savier

New Year. New restaurants. We are kicking off 2020’s Dining for Dollar$ with Mexican cuisine. XICA CANTINA will be hosting January’s Dining for Dollar$ on Wednesday, January 22.

Portland Mexican favorite, the upscale XICO (chee-ko) on SE Division, featured in the Oregonian’s top 40 restaurants every year since its opening in 2012, opened XICA (chee-ka) Cantina, a more casual second location, at the corner of NW 23rd and Savier in July 2019, serving local, organic and handmade Mexican cuisine, fine wine, and artisanal Mezcal as well as a small kids menu! Reservations are accepted and recommended. You can make reservations online directly from their website. They also accept take out orders by calling 971-339-9041. Their capacity is 74 to give you an idea of the size of space. They are open for lunch and dinner from 11 AM to 9 PM.

Check out this great write up from the Oregonian – XICA CANTINA.

A personal and incredibly timely testimonial from XICO’s owner Liz:

With a daughter turning 5 in January, who is about to enter kindergarten at Buckman Elementary, I’m concerned about kindergarten class sizes. I believe that kids thrive in environments where the highest standards are set and maintained. I’m happy to support Chapman and hope together we can make sure our students are nurtured. Xico/Xica co-owner and Hammer & Hand founder Daniel Thomas is a supporter of Chapman Elementary, recently making a $500 donation to the 80’s Prom Fundraiser. At Hammer & Hand, every donation made to a relatively well supported public school is matched for one of the neediest schools, spreading the resources around the city. Both our businesses, Hammer & Hand and Xico/Xica, are invested in the community, employing and providing health insurance to more than 100 Portlanders, and supporting and promoting local producers like our dear farmers and wine makers. We’re so excited to be in your neighborhood and look forward to meeting you all at Cantina Xica on January 22nd!

Talent Show – Sign up by Wednesday 1/8

Chapman’s annual Talent Show is coming up quick on Thursday, January 16th at 6 PM! This event is open to all Chapman students but we have a limited number of performance slots that will be filled on a first-come, first-serve basis. Please be sure to get your forms turned in no later than this week’s deadline, Wednesday, January 8th. Forms can be emailed to chapmantalentshow@gmail.com or turned into the PTA box in the Chapman main office. Forms came home in children’s backpacks or you can download a form here.

Lorien Steele (a 2nd grade parent) is coordinating the show for the students but she needs your help! We are looking for:

  • 1 parent volunteer to help usher our performers on and off stage
  • 2 parents to help with setting up the children’s equipment backstage

Please contact Lorien at chapmantalentshow@gmail.com if you are able to help.

Everyone is invited to attend and cheer on our students as they hit the stage. We hope to see you there!
